Holy A&P Cereal Money Maker Batman!

A&P is having a General Mills sale/catalina deal this week. The deal is buy $30 worth of GM products and get back a $8.00 catalina. The best part of the deal is it’s working on the shelf price (which is incredibly high), not the sale price of each item. For example the Kix retail for $3.69 and the Trix for $3.97. But they are selling on sale for just $1.50 a box (must buy in sets of four, mix and match however you want). As you can tell I stocked up for me, my mom and my grandma. We’ll be meeting up in Boston Easter weekend so I can give them everything (and visit of course).

Here’s how the deal worked…

Bought:
4 cheerios $3.79 shelf price ($1.50 sale price times four) $6.00
2 Kix $3.69 shelf price ($1.50 sale price times two) $3.00
2 Chex $4.19 shelf price ($1.50 sale prices times two) $3.00

Coupons: (my A&P only doubles two “alike” coupons per transaction thankfully E was willing to shop with me)
2, $0.75 doubled on chex
2, 0.75 doubled on kix
2, 0.55 doubled on cheerios

Paid:
$3.80 out of pocket, got back a $8.00 catalina

Rinse and repeat and you’ve got a whole lot of cereal for free, plus a bunch of cats to use towards your next purchase of anything (not just cereal). Let’s just say tonight’s E’s having a $10.00 steak ;-)

Hope you’re having a lucky St. Patrick’s day. The weather here in NY is beautiful and I’m watching the 250th NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade. To save a little “green” I’ll be taking my dinner to work and drinking beer at home, instead of going out. What are your plans for St. Patrick’s day?

Here’s tonight’s dinner. Because I’m lazy (and because I work strange hours), I love using my crockpot. One of my favorite cheap winter meals to make is Roast chicken with potatoes, onions and carrots.

Here’s my basic “recipe”:

  • Put 2 chicken breasts (with ribs and skin) in the bottom of my crockpot.
  • Peel 5-6 small potatoes and 3-4 carrots, and 2-3 small onions and put them on top of the chicken.
  • Add about a cup and a half of chicken stock and a few hand fulls of fresh poultry herbs. If I don’t have any fresh herbs I use a palm full of dried herbs de Provence. You can also add salt and pepper to taste.

There’s really no science to how you add everything to the pot. Just plop everything in and 8 hours on low you’re good to go. A yummy hot meal with no dishes, little prep time, and no preservatives or added “junk”. Total cost to make this meal about $6.00 (chicken was $3.00, potatoes a dollar a bag, carrots $2.00, the onion and herbs I already had) and I’ll be able to eat it for lunch or dinner forĀ  4-5 meals.

I’ve been using ShopAtHome for about a year now and a few days ago I got my first cash back check in the mail. I also recently got my first check back from Ebates (you can see the screen shot of the paypal deposit in this post). I really like using Ebates and ShopAtHome because I can re-coop a percentage of the purchase price of items I buy online. It’s an added little perk when the checks arrive because it’s money that I usually forget that I’d be getting back.

I would recommend signing up for a few of the cash back sites (Ebates, ShopAtHome, etc.) for your online shopping. They’re all free and only take a minute to sign up. Before I make any purchase online I check to see which site is offering the largest percentage of cash back. Sometimes it’s as high as 50%.

If you’re not familiar with ShopAtHome here’s how it works:

  1. Simply go to ShopAtHome or Ebates or whatever cash back site you want to use
  2. Search for the company you’ll be shopping at (gap, magazines.com etc)
  3. Click on the link that says “Gap” (or wherever you’re shopping)
  4. Click shop now
  5. A “shopping ticket” will open up in a new window and then take you to the Gap’s website
  6. Earn a percentage of your shopping chart’s total back. Right now at Gap it’s 8%

It’s that simple. If you’re buying anything online you should check to see if there’s a company offering cash back first. It might only make you a few cents at a time, but over time those cents add up! The more you shop online the more you’ll get back. I’m not a huge online shopper, but $25.00 bucks a year per site in free money isn’t bad!

Do you use a cash back website? What’s your favorite?

The ShopAtHome links are affiliate links. If you don’t feel comfortable using them, you can sign up directly from the site here

E and I had been thinking about getting a cuisinart food processor for a while, but naturally with the two of us being cheap frugal we decided we’d wait until a really good deal came around. Neither of us were really looking for a food processor on a daily basis, but when E saw an online ad for a cuisinart food processor at Macys we decided we’d head to our local store to see if the model we were interested in was available (we didn’t want to pay shipping if possible, like I said we’re cheap).

When we arrived at the store E noticed that the model we were interested in was not actually on sale. After asking him several times if he was sure that the price was in fact valid in the store (sorry honey), E asked the salesman if the processor was on sale. He scanned the processor and said it wasn’t. He explained that sometimes the store doesn’t have the same deals that are shown online.

Conveniently the salesman’s manager overheard the conversation and said that they could honor the online price if we could show them the price on Macy’s website. So without second thought I pulled out my blackberry and furiously typed in Macy’s.com. Strangely when the site popped up, the model that we planned to buy for $79.99 was actually more expensive then the newer more up to date model DLC-2007 that we ended up purchasing.

Long story short we showed the salesman my phone indicating that the price online was $69.99 and he price modified the processor from $149.99 to just $69.99! Holy cow, SCORE! We were both more then thrilled. So the lesson here is: Always shop with your smart phone. On more then one occasion now it has saved me money and a huge hassle when I’ve been able verify a price, prove to a cashier that my coupon came from the manufacturer’s website etc. Strangely, as you can see from the Macy’s.com screen shot, the model we bought is listed at $129.99, while my phone brought up the site indicating the processor was just $69.99. I still can’t explain why it happened, but we both are happy that it did.

Off to make fresh hummus and pita chips with the new toy…

Disregard the finger prints and smudges on my phone, I swear it’s not that dirty in person.

I know the economy is pretty crappy right know and there are a lot of people wondering how to make money from home. I’m by no means an expert on this topic, but thought that I’d share how I make money writing for Break Studios from home during my free time.

As some of you may already know, I work full-time as a licensed master social worker from 2:30pm-10pm Monday-Friday. That gives me a few hours in the morning and a few hours at night to work from home.About 2 months ago I began working for an online company called, Break Studios. Per Break’s website:

“Highly trafficked Break Studios is looking for freelance writers for our community of highly popular and humorous websites, including Break.com, MadeMan, Holy Taco, Cage Potato, Screen Junkies, and Chickipedia”

Step One- Application Process. There is a basic application process that includes submitting a writing sample. Once your writing sample is accepted you can immediately begin writing articles. All of the articles are already titled and you choose which ones you want to write. Disclosure: Some of the article titles are pretty racy as they are targeted to a mostly male audience. If you’re uncomfortable writing “those” types of articles, just skip them. There are plenty of mild topics like, “Ten gift ideas for a new girlfriend” or “How to avoid ingrown toenails”.

Step Two- Write articles and submit them. Once you’re finished writing the article, it’s submitted electronically to your editor for approval. This process takes a day or two depending on how many articles your editor is reading through. Your editor can approve the article or send it back for a revision. I’ve only had one article sent back and that was because I didn’t read the style guideline and messed up the numbering on a bulleted post.

Step Three- Get paid! Each article that’s accepted will net you a whopping $8.00. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but honestly most of the articles are pretty short and don’t require any research. I can pump out 2-3 articles an hour if I’m not surfing the net or watching TV. You get paid twice a month via PayPal and there are no weird fees or minimum amounts to worry about. If you write one article, you get paid $8.00.

If you enjoy writing and would like to make money writing for break studios from home, I’d definitely suggest you give Break Studios a try. Signing up is free and you’ve got nothing to lose! The above image is a screenshot from my paypal account from Feb 1st showing that Break Studios (TMFT Enterprises) paid me $48.00!

Everything in this article is my opinion. I wasn’t paid for this post (they don’t even know who I am, as I write under a pseudonym). Break Studios doesn’t have a referral program and if you sign up I don’t benefit in any way.

Questions about Break Studios? I’ll do my best to answer them.

I haven’t been doing a lot of deal shopping lately because I’ve been trying to set up a new website. For the past 7 days I’ve tried over 7 wordpress themes and haven’t found one yet that is exactly what I want. Frustrating! What’s more frustrating, is the fact that I have very little no website design experience and when I run into a problem, I can’t fix it. I’ve learned a lot about html and different website plug ins (more then I really care to know), but there’s still so much more to learn.

I’m beginning to wonder if it would be a better use of my time and energy to just pay someone to set up the site the way I want it. But the frugalista in me keeps saying, “No way, buy yourself a book at the library and figure this s%*t out”. In any case I’ll be back tomorrow with a post about some of the money making ideas I’ve been thinking about lately. See you then!
